There are many different types of termites. As the only termites that can burrow and feed in dry conditions, Desert Subterranean Termites are found in areas of the United States with dry desert climates. This tends to be New Mexico, Arizona, Western Texas, and Southern California.
Desert Subterranean Termites differ in appearance from their counter parts in that they have long slender mandibles rather than the normal stout wide mandibles seen in other species. The soldiers of this termite species are much smaller than those of other termite species. This allows them to penetrate smaller cracks and openings than other termites.
When a home is infested with desert subterranean termites one will often see small mud tubes hanging from shelves, overhangs, wood ceilings, and such. Their food of choice, like many other termites is the cellulose part of wood.
